Who Is Embarrassed Most by Bedwetting?

by Leigh Fraser

I found this article on kidderminstershuttle.co.uk and just had to comment on some of the opening paragraphs.

What I find interesting (or is that disturbing) is that it is the parents who are indicating that they are embarrassed by bedwetting. This astounds me because there is absolutely nothing wrong with either the children, or with the parents. This is a natural thing for many children, and even some teenagers and adults.

Every night, up to half a million UK children and teenagers wet the bed.

But because the problem is perceived as embarrassing, many people do not talk about it, and most parents think they’re alone in trying to deal with it.

In fact, a recent DryNites survey revealed 75% of mums thought bedwetting was an embarrassing condition, and almost four out of 10 parents whose children wet the bed admitted not discussing it with others for fear of being seen as a bad parent, or having their child labelled because of it.

What worries me the most is that if parents are concerned about bedwetting because they are embarrassed by it, then what sort of messages are getting through to the child? This must be reflected in every interaction with the child when it comes to their bedwetting, whether that is intentional on the part of the parent or not. It is just bound to come through in their communication.

If you have a bedwetting child then you are not alone, and you are not a bad parent. It is a normal part of child development for many children.

Jenny Perez, director of ERIC, says: “Bedwetting can be very distressing for children and parents, but the scale of the problem remains hidden, partly because people find it embarrassing to talk about.

“Our research shows that only one in three affected families comes forward for help. But families are not alone. Things can be done to overcome or manage the problem.”

Yes they can! For example… here’s a link to just one site offering a full course on how to stop bedwetting.

But you may not even need that… most kids will stop bedwetting all by themselves. Some just take a bit longer than others.
